Woodlands Special Thali
Woodlands Special Thali

Although there are probably a few others, but the Madras New Woodlands Restaurant is the only pure vegetarian Indian food restaurant that I know of in Penang. When I say "pure", it means that don't expect to order a Masala Chicken or Mutton Curry to go with your dishes. The food here is excellent. Eating here reminds me of the dishes I ate when I travelled to India a few years back.

As you can see from the picture above, they have 3 different serving times. The menu specifically mentions the time you can order the dishes. I believe that they are pretty strict about the times, meaning they most likely won't serve dishes for the lunch session in the morning, etc.

From what I have observed, whenever customers asked them which dish they recommend during the lunch session, they will recommend the Woodlands Special Thali. And I have to admit that this dish is really good. The menu says that it comes with "Sweet, Chappathi, Dhall, Rice, Sambar, Rasam, 3 Vege, Spicy Spl Kulambu, Curd, Chilly Papard". But be forewarned that this dish is very filling. I always feel bloated at the end of it, albeit feeling satisfied.

Other dishes that I have that is equally delicious are the Vegetable Briyani, Vege Pulao, Mushroom Pulao, Palak Panner (Home made cheese smothered in freshly ground spinach), Aloo Palak (cube of potato in freshly ground spinach). I can't remember which tosai I tried, but I remember that it was pretty delicious as well.

The interior is pretty dimly lit, with Indian music played softly in the background. They have a counter on the outside that sells all kinds of Indian sweets.

I would highly recommend all of you to try the food here. Although there are other good Indian food restaurants in the area, but the food here is not something you can find easily in Penang, as well as Malaysia.

Location: 60 Lebuh Penang (Penang Street). Not to be confused with the famous Penang Road. Located in the vicinity of Little India. A stone's throw from Sri Ananda Bahwan.
